Voice Lessons and Musical Workshops

My experience singing and teaching voice lessons has helped me develop an appreciation for a wide variety of music -- from blues to Broadway, jazz to opera, folk to rock. I love working with students in all these areas and more!

My teaching is centered around the firm belief that music in the vast majority of styles can be sung both expressively and in a way that protects and promotes vocal health. Really, both are important -- I mean, what singer doesn't want to have such solid technique that his or her voice lasts a lifetime? Then again, who would want flawless technique at the expense of individuality and expressiveness? The good news is that healthy singing can actually free a singer to be more expressive!

I also like to remind my students that as singers, their bodies are their instruments, and deserve the same care as a priceless violin or an antique grand piano. A little time in each voice lesson is spent focusing on ways that we can take care of our voices by taking care of ourselves.

Learn to Sing and More - Music Theory and Ear Training

Growing up singing around the campfire, I never imagined that I'd one day be able to see a bunch of lines and dots on a printed page and turn it into a song. Now, I love being able to teach myself a new piece of music!

For those who are interested, I can teach you what the notes and other symbols on a piece of sheet music actually mean. I can also teach you to "sight read", or sing a simple melody the first time you see the printed music, without someone playing along! Depending on how in depth you'd like to go, we can either work this training into your voice lessons, or schedule additional time to really dig in.

My Philosophy as a Voice Teacher

Finally, and perhaps most importantly, my teaching is built on the belief that each student is an individual. Everyone I work with has different needs, talents, and interests -- and a wide range of musical training and experience. Every one of them has a different way of learning, and learns at his or her own pace. By focusing on the individual, I work to make voice lessons and workshops challenging, fun and inspiring for each of my students -- beginners and advanced musicians alike.
